DATE NUT ORANGE BREAD This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Markie Estate in Sachse, Texas in 1982.

Ingredients
  • 1-1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 large seedless navel orange cut in large chunks
  • 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 cup walnuts
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoon butter cut in 4 pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions
  1. Combine dates, water and baking soda in small mixing bowl then set aside.
  2. Grease and flour loaf pan then preheat oven to 350.
  3. In a food processor with the knife blade place orange pieces including skin and process to chop.
  4. Add flour, sugar, eggs, butter, salt and half the date mixture and process just until well mixed.
  5. Add remaining date mixture and nuts then process 15 seconds.
  6. Pour into loaf pan and bake 60 minutes then cool 10 minutes.
  7. Loosen sides with a spatula and remove from pan.
