Fool Labels Move Forward

To assist those with allergies, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has focused more closely on ensuring that labels on food include information about the eight most common food allergens - peanuts, milk, wheat, eggs, tree nuts, fish, crustacean shellfish and soybean.

In 2004, Congress passed the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA), which requires that manufacturers state clearly - and in common language - if their food contains any of these major allergens.

FALCPA applies to food products that are labeled on or after January 1, 2006, so not all labels have caught up.

If your child is allergic to milk, know that milk may be called "casein" or "whey" on a label. Or if your child has an allergy to soy, be sure to look for "lecithin" when reading labels.

excellent info. I was one of many who pushed them to be more specific with the food labelling. I'm glad we all could make a difference.
