Nutritious Alternatives

When preparing meals without the foods that cause a reaction, it is usually a matter of substituting an alternative in your recipe. If you are buying ready made meals or ingredients, food labels become your best friend.

Overall, the less processed a food item is, the lower the risk that it contains additives with the allergen you are trying to avoid.

This article lists alternatives to six common food allergens. Keep in mind the rule of thumb --- check the ingredients list of any processed item before calling it allergen-free.

    Quick Guideline of "Safe" Foods:

For the six allergens discussed in the chart, the items below are generally considered "safe":

Breads, baked goods and pastries not cooked or topped with the allergen in question

Most fresh, frozen or canned vegetables and fruits without sauces or breading containing the allergen as an ingredient

Freshly-brewed tea and coffee or fruit juice not containing the allergen as an ingredient

Any fresh or frozen beef, chicken, lamb, pork, turkey, veal or fish served without prepackaged sauces, breading or gravy (always check the labels for processed meats like deli meat or canned and dried meats)

Milk, cheese, yogurt or some cottage cheese without allergen-containing ingredients

beware of products made in other countries, not all of them are as detailed or inclusive with their labelling as we are in the U.S.
