Lupe Pintos and Rafi's (Shops, not recipes)

I know that not everyone in the group is living in the UK, but for us American Ex-Pats who do live here it is important to be able to get somethings from Home. Lupe Pintos is based in Edinburgh and does mail order. They really have a great selection of Items and they are not all listed on the site. If you are hankerin' for some WELSH’S GRAPE Jelly (which you can not get anything that resembles that here, The English don't do Grape Jelly, and Jelly here in the UK is Jello in the states) I am told they usually have it in stock there.

And this past weekend we went to York, England for Easter weekend and we were able to go into a wonderful spice shop called Rafi's. This place is Brill! They make up spice packs with all the spices you will need to make some Wonderful authentic Indian dishes. Each packet is made up fresh while you wait. The sights.. The smells.. oye! It was heaven! Rafi, the woman who owns the shop, is also a cookbook author and you can get her books through the shop.

    Dee,
Thanks so much for posting the info about Lupe Pintos and the place in York. I am hoping to go to York sometime this spring and I will definitely look for Rafi's. We use a tremendous amount of spices. My husband does all of the Indian cooking in our house. I know he will definitely see the place you described in York.

    Ooooooh Debbie,
When you go to York and you go into Rafi's you MUST get some of the Samosas there. They are THE best I have ever had... ever! And get some of the Sambar if they have any, its got to be good I am sure. How 'bout you swing around down this way and pick me up and I will go too LOL I would drive to York just to get some of Rafi's Samosas anyway.

    Dee,
I just had samosas for the first time recently and loved them. How would you compare York to Chester? Hope to go to York before the school kids are out here.

Now that Easter is over and the Holiday season is getting into swing... I'd try and go to York during the week. Get your Honey to take a day off if he can and avoid the weekend. When we were there even the locals were dreading the weekends. If you like Chester I am sure you will like York as well. The Minster is a fab bit of sandstone.... The Shambles is so interesting, very 'Chester like'. Just outside the city walls is an OLD pub called the Black Swan, built in 1417, stop in for a Pint :-) It might even be haunted. Oh and they do some interesting live gigs there every night of the week if I am not mistaken. The Musicians, not the ghosts .. !
