I was never a big fan of Queen Victoria. From what I've read in the past she was very selfish, spoiled, short tempered and known for her tantrums; she didn't treat her children well (she wrote in her journals how they took Albert away from her and she resented them, and she was very mean to her eldest son)
So I didn't have high hopes for liking the show! But I can see they're trying to make her more likable and just annoying enough, lol ;)
I do like how they focus on Albert and the household staff too. I like the story line on Albert's brother Ernst with Harriet, even if it wasn't true!
At least they add a piece or two of real history into every episode. And I just love the Victorian era, for style and architecture!

Yes, I read that about Queen Victoria as well Shona, but it is just a TV show after all so I am enjoying it, even if they're stretching the truth. :)

I just got my hands on the First Season of "The Crown". We can't get Netflix as our Internet strength isn't good enough but I managed to borrow the DVD's from the library. Excited!

Yep, just a tv show! I do like it but not nearly as much Downton (I miss DA!) Lol.....
Ooooh, lucky you on the Crown DVD...I don't have Netflix either and was hoping to watch that tv series one day. Do tell how you like it!
Claire Foy is such a good actress, I loved her in Upstairs Downstairs and Wolf Hall, so I bet she's really good in the Crown! :)

We really enjoyed Victoria last night. I know it is just a TV show but all in all it was very well done.

Shona, we've been binge watching "The Crown". We've watched 7 episodes so far and have three more to go in the first season. I will admit to never being that interested in History Class but between "Victoria" and "The Crown" and some movies we've recently watched, I'm learning a lot about Churchill and Eisenhower, the Queens etc. I'd highly recommend "The Crown" if you're at all in to the Royals or even just as a history based show. Again, it's made for TV so it's not going to be totally true, but it does give you a good overview I think. The Queen must just shudder watching it though I bet! LOLOL.

We found out that "Victoria" is based on her entries in her diary. The writer was able to obtain her diary while 'Victoria" was written for the TV episodes. So many things in this series are true.

Queen Victoria only become harsh and angry after Albert's death. Yes, she was spoiled and resented her children to a degree. We will see how fast this series goes through the years. She reigned for 60 years so this will be just snippets of it all.

Thanks Janet! I will definitely put the The Crown on the list of shows to watch! I love history and read mostly historically fiction, so I don't mind some of the "fiction" of the tv shows (it adds to the drama, lol ;) I wonder if the Queen watched it! The Royals exclaim they don't watch any shows about themselves, but you'd think they'd have to be curious at least! ;)
Joce, I wondered how many years they'd go through Victoria too. I guess her later years they'd have to get a new actress perhaps? The writer said she adds a lot of facts but embellishes it to a degree, changes some dates and order of things. For instance Ernst and his Father did have Syphilis (Ernst contacted the heredity form from his father). But the affair with Harriet is unfounded ;also her husband didn't die until the same year or just before Albert died, some 20 yrs later! It doesn't bother me though, I think for those who don't know the history would be curious and look up some of the facts, so no matter what you are learning something still! :) I also read Victoria would lose her temper in public with Albert quite often, and even threw a glass or vase at him during a dinner party, Lol! She was a very passionate woman! :D

So Jim and I finished watching the first season of "The Crown". We quite enjoyed it but also feel some new sympathy for the Royals. They had a rough time of it and no more so than Elizabeth with Philip. He seems like a royal PIA HTG! I did google to see if the Royals watch this program and supposedly the Queen likes it?

You mention Victoria throwing a vase at Albert in Public Shona....in "The Crown", Elizabeth and Philip get into a heated argument which happens to spill outside....shouting, yelling....until they realize the press is behind the entrance gate filming every freakin' second. They go back inside, subdued and embarrassed and then Elizabeth sucks it up and goes out to talk to the reporters who actually hand over the film reel to her. It really would be hard to live under such scrutiny.

I had no idea Elizabeth and Phillip had a heated relationship too! It must be hard, especially being a Queen and having your husband as a subordinate. I feel for them too, having your life so public and living under scrutiny. Now a days the Press looks for them to fail and would take advantage of that fight like that; it must be harder for the younger Royals!
I finally watched the last episode of Victoria. I was so intrigued by the African princess I had to look up the real story!
She was a gift from King Ghezo after her family was slaughtered and Captain Forbes saved her and convinced the King to give her as a gift to Queen Victoria to save her life. She first met the Queen in early Nov.,1850, but never lived with her. She was declared the Queens Goddaughter and went to live with different families (Capt. Forbes died the following year but she did take on his last name) She was sent to live in Sierra Leone after developing a chronic cough, they thought was from the British climate. She lived there for almost 5 years then returned to live with the Schoen family in Gillingham. At 19 yrs old she reluctantly married a Captain James Pinson Labulo Davies. A wealthy business man from Nigeria. (The Queen would cut her off financially if she didn't marry him.) They moved to Africa and had 3 children, Victoria (whom the Queen was also godmother and supported her education) Arthur and Stella. Sarah died in 1880 of tuberculosis on the Portuguese island of Madeira at the age of only 37.

Wow on the actual story of the African Princess Shona. That's very interesting. Feel quite sorry for her from start to finish!
