How to Join a GTA 5 Friend Session at U4GM

A good GTA Online session feels less like a queue and more like a night out in Los Santos. You can jump from a contact mission to a race, mess about in Freemode, or simply cru ...More ise around while talking rubbish with your crew. If you're setting up a new profile or sorting out your progress, GTA 5 Accounts may be part of the conversation, but getting into a mate's lobby is usually the first thing players want to do.

Use the in-game Online menu
Once you're loaded into GTA V, bring up the pause menu and move across to the Online tab. From there, open the Friends section and look for the person you want to join. Their status should show whether they're in GTA Online and, in most cases, whether their session has room. Pick their name, select the option to join, then give the game a moment to move your character over. It's simple, though loading can take a little longer when the lobby is busy.

Open the pause menu while in Story Mode or an Online session.
Go to Online, then open the Friends list.
Select a friend who is currently playing GTA Online.
Choose Join Game and wait for the session change.
Invites can be quicker
If the friends list isn't showing the right option, ask your mate to send an invite instead. On PC, invitations normally arrive through the Rockstar Games Social Club overlay. Press Tab to view the notification, then hit Enter to accept it. PlayStation and Xbox players can follow the controller prompt shown on screen. An invite is especially handy when someone is in an invite-only lobby, running a heist setup, or trying to keep the group together between jobs.

PC checks before you load in
Windows PC players should make sure BattlEye is running before trying to enter GTA Online. Rockstar added the service on September 17, 2024, and the game may ask you to restart if it isn't enabled. You can also check the Rockstar Games Launcher settings if that message keeps appearing. Steam Deck and Linux players may run into online compatibility limits, so Story Mode can be the only available option there. It's worth checking this first; nobody wants to keep their friends waiting at the loading screen.

Keep the group moving
If joining fails, have the host switch sessions, resend the invitation, or check whether their lobby is full. A fresh invite often does the job. Once everyone is in, save the complicated stuff for later and pick an activity straight away.
