    Neerday Steak Pie by Sitbynellie

I've made this a few times now but never took a picture or added to IMI before now. I've been meaning to share this here for so long, but as soon as the family smells this cooking they are hovering like wolves and attack it before I get a picture!

I've always made this using leftover beef roast, but this time I used what the recipe calls for--fresh stewing beef. The recipe calls for 1kg but I only had about half that amount, just under 500kg or 1 pound. So to make up for the missing pound I weighed some vegetables to match that using 1 large russet potato, 2 carrots, 1 celery stalk and a handful of peas.
The recipe also calls to brown the meat in beef drippings, but I've always used butter or oil-- this time I saved my leftover beef drippings from a previous roast and froze it along with gravy. I had about 1 cup of gravy so I used that and topped with a cup of beef stock to make up the 450mls of stock called for.
I followed the recipe using exact amounts of onion, flour, Worcestershire sauce, tomato puree, thyme etc...(just note that tomato puree in the UK means the concentrated tomato paste that comes in the tube, If you only have the canned tomato paste than I would use a tablespoon for the 2tsp's of the concentrated tomato paste or "puree" called for).
I followed the directions exactly but since I added the vegetables, I added the carrot and celery with the onion and added the potato about half way through the stewing process. And only added the peas at the very end, right before baking the pie.
I like to bake this in my 7x11" glass cake pan and used the whole sheet of puff pastry rather than trimming it to fit in a round pie dish.
Every time I've made this whether with leftover beef, leftover gravy or just stock, with or without vegetables etc...it has always been delicious with the seasonings called for. And the baking time is spot on. The whole family loves it!!!

Nice photo, Cosmicmother! Your crust is beautiful. You find some of the best recipes. :) We would love this. I would probably add veggies just to give it more bulk, texture, and color. Saved!

    Thanks Diz!
Don recommended this to me ages ago in the Refugee group when I was looking for something different to make with leftover prime rib (just after Christmas a few yrs ago). he said this is traditional to make for New Years! It's similar to an English steak pie except those tend to be a steak and kidney pie (eww, lol..) or a steak and ale pie. There is only a handful of recipes on here using steak and a puff pastry crust and this was the only one without kidney, alcohol or mushrooms! ;)

    Thanks Michelle!
It is good served over mashed potatoes! Usually if I use left over beef I make sure to have leftover mashed potatoes too. ;)
However, cooking the beef and stewing it all together made for a tastier pie this time, and probably adding the veggies helped too. I think I will add veggies to it every time for now on! :D

Looks awesome Shona! I too like the idea of adding vegetables to the mix. Then you don't have to cook a veggie side.
