    Rugelach by semigoodcook

I wanted to make this around the holidays but never got to it. The last few times I've made a Rugelach type cookie I used my Cottage cheese pastry--which is like a puff pastry, light and flaky. I knew this would be like a pie dough, so I expected that. But for me I would use a puff pastry for the dough as I like a lighter pastry. But that is strictly my personal preference and based on what I am used too!!
The kids loved it and ate them all, minus the one I tried. The dough has no sugar, and I forgot the cinnamon sugar in them! So, I didn't think they would like them as it wasn't sweet, but they gobbled them up! :)
With the other half of the dough, I added some raw sugar to the tops (The mini turnover ones) so it was a little sweeter than the crescents. For the crescents I made the traditional filling with jam (raspberry), nuts (almonds), semi-sweet chocolate and dried cranberries instead of currants or raisins.
The turnovers I only used raspberry jam and semisweet chocolate. I cut them with a fluted 2" cookie cutter, added a 1/4 tsp dollop of jam to the center and two chocolate chips (added point side down into the jam so it didn't poke out of the pastry). Then I slightly wet the pastry edge with water and folded the dough over and pressed down with a fork.
The dough is great to work with and came together very quickly and easily by hand, using a pastry blender vs food processor or stand mixer. The crescents were a pain to cut once filled, so I switched to the turnover style on the other half of dough (I have little patience...lol ;)
The recipe says to roll one dough portion into a circle, spread on the jam and sprinkle the ingredients over the jam and cut into triangles---I usually cut the crescents first then sprinkle on the ingredients-- so I suggest you try it both ways and see which way you prefer. :)
If you're a fan of traditional Rugelach you'll love this recipe!!

Great photo, Cosmicmother! Those look so good! You put a lot of work into those. I've always wanted to make Rugelach and just haven't gotten around to it. I think this is the first recipe I've seen that uses chocolate. Seems like an odd combination of flavors. Glad your kids liked them.

Beautiful photo Shona! I love Rugelach cookies. Love them because they are not excessively sweet but still satisfying.

    Thanks everyone! :)

The chocolate must be a newer twist! I've also seen them with a nut and cocoa powder "paste". But most often with apricot jam, which I think is just a glue to hold the nuts down. You could fill them with anything! I like just jam and nuts, but the kids like chocolate of course. ;)
