I can't do the carb

  • linebb956 17 years ago
I want to, but it effects my kidneys. My husband is still on it, and it is the only diet he can stick to. I wish I could, but after 2 trips to the dr... I was told not to... I did lose weight though... Now I have to count calories again and I hate that!

He is able to have Dreamfields pasta and it does not affect on weight loss, I also like it. Taste like real pasta..

I have kidney disease, my kidney function is in stage 3 when I reach stage 5 I'll have to go on dialysis.

Because of my kidney disease I also am a diabetic. I'm what they call a type 1 + 1/2 I'm not a type two as I rely on insulin to make it through the day. So I swing high and low.

A low carb diet is my only way to exist. Any grains will send my sugars up from the 90's to over 400 in a matter of an hour. That puts a larger work load on my kidneys and further damages them.

The thing people think they can do is sit down and eat copious amounts of protein but that can't happen. If one eats too much protein it converts to glucose just like carbs do. It can be quite hard on those of us who over indulge on protein as well.

A woman shouldn't have more than 6 ounces of protein a day and a man who is healthy shouldn't eat more than 10 ounces of protien a day.

It's a mis-conception that Low carbing is all about eating protein. Actually it's about eating higher fats too. Good fats though nothing fake.

I follow a plan that's good on Dr. Bernstein's diet for diabetics. I'm only allowed 6 grams carbs in the morning 12 grams for lunch and 12 grams for dinner. If I decide to eat a forth meal during the day I space my carbs like this 6-8-8-8.

My typical diet is balanced this way and it allows me to lose weight too.
In addition to 6-12-12, you will find that with Dr. Bernstein's WOE (way of eating) is basically a high fat, moderate protein, low carbs. My daily calories come from (on the average) 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs. There is a great tool you can use online for free at fitday.com. It helps you learn about and monitor your foods so that it becomes easier for you to work out these percentages daily.

My husband follows this same plan and he's not a diabetic nor has any health issues and is very atheletic. He adds a bit more protein than I do but his kidneys are healthy.

    Hope this helps?

Sounds like you've found a good way of handling your kidney issues- I don't have that issue so I pretty much eat protein, fat, salads and some veggies- about 20 grams carbs per day and I've done well with this- I use Atkins and it works for me- everyone needs to understand that this woe is NOT for everyone but for those who are carb sensitive, this works well.
