Mostly, though it was used by them to thicken stews and gumbos; and not so much as a spice. I personally believe it's a wonderful spice, though if you'd like a real spice flavor; you might try root bark instead. Some people love the flavor, some don't so go sparingly until you know how your group is going to react to it.
