Looking for War Cake

  • lindygirl98 15 years ago
My mother grew up in the depression and had a very old recipe from her grandmother. They called it "War Cake" somehow it got losted after she died, but it tasted sorta like spice cake, if anyone out there has a recipe I would be one happy girl.
    Thanks

Depression Cake or maybe known as War Cake

Here is one recipe that I had on hand for Depression Cake or War Cake. I like to add vanilla or brandy to mine but that isn't the true recipe.

    Makes: 1 "9 x 13 inch" cake

    Ingredients:
    1 cup shortening
Note: you can also use vegetable oil but the original recipe calls for shortening
    2 cups water
2 cups raisins, soaked to plump up
    1 teaspoon cinnamon
    1 teaspoon nutmeg
    2 cups white sugar
    3 cups all purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda

    Method:
In a saucepan combine the shortening, water, raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar. Simmer for 10 minutes.
Remove form heat and let stand until cool.
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
    Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.
Stir the flour and baking soda into the cooled raisin mixture and mix until just blended.
    Pour batter into prepared pan.
    Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 45 minutes.
