I subscribe to Gourmet Weekly - this is an article from the most recent issue:

    LOW-SUGAR WATERMELONS
The U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service has released two new low-sugar watermelon varieties touted as dieter- and diabetic-friendly ("a little artificial sweetener [will] give it a flavor that's comparable to conventional watermelons"). But watermelon is only a problem because for years it has been bred for maximum sugar, to the detriment of flavor. Why not promote heirloom watermelons, which can have 25 percent less sugar than conventional ones?
