Clove Apple Cake Recipe

Ingredients
  • Additional ground cloves (optional)
  • 3/4 c sugar
  • 1/4 c sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 1/3 c all-purpose flour
  • CUSTARD SAUCE:
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  •  
  • 2 c milk
  • 2 tbsps all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsps butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 1/2 c sliced, peeled tart apples
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 tbsps butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 c milk

Directions
  • Step #1 In a mixing bowl, cream butter, sugar & cloves.
  • Step #2 Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Step #3 Combine flour & baking powder; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk.
  • Step #4 Fold in apples.
  • Step #5 Transfer to a greased & floured 9-in.
  • Step #6 round baking pan.
  • Step #7 Bake at 375 degrees F for 35-40 mins or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Step #8 Cool on a wire rack.
  • Step #9 Meanwhile, in a saucepan, mix sugar, flour & milk until smooth.
  • Step #10 Bring to a boil over medium-heat; cook & stir for 2 mins or until thickened & bubbly.
  • Step #11 Remove from the heat.
  • Step #12 Stir a small amount into egg; return all to pan.
  • Step #13 bring to a gentle boil.
  • Step #14 Reduce heat; cook & stir for 2 mins.
  • Step #15 Remove from the heat; whisk in butter & vanilla.
  • Step #16 Serve over warm cake.
  • Step #17 Sprinkle top with ground cloves if desired.
