Melt Away Bars Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract .
  • 1 c sugar .
  • 1 c butter, softened .
  • 1 dash cream of tartar .
  • 2 c all-purpose flour .
  • 1/2 c sliced walnuts .
  • 2 large egg whites .
  • 1 large egg yolk .
  • 1/2 c sugar .
  • 2 (20 oz) cans peach pie filling

Directions
  • Step #1 Preheat oven to 350*.
  • Step #2 mix flour, sugr, egg yolk & vanilla in a bowl -- cut in butter with a pastry mixer until mixture resembles coarse corn meal.
  • Step #3 turn into ungreased jelly roll pan.
  • Step #4 15x10x2" -- pat into an even layer on bottom & about 1" up sides.
  • Step #5 arrange pie filling on top.
  • Step #6 set aside.
  • Step #7 whip egg whites, cream of tartar & remaining sugar till stiff peaks form, when beaters are pulled up.
  • Step #8 spread evenly over peach pie filling.
  • Step #9 top this with sliced nuts, if desired.
  • Step #10 bake for 30-35 mins or golden brown.
  • Step #11 cool.
  • Step #12 cut into bars -- may vary pie filling for a different taste --.
