Velma's Chili Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 c sliced onions .
  • grated cheddar cheese .
  • 2 tbsps vegetable oil .
  • 3 tbsps chili powder .
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced .
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves .
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar .
  • 2-14 1/2 oz sliced tomatoes with juice .
  • 1 c red wine .
  • sliced green onions .
  • 2 (16 oz) cans kidney beans, drained .
  • 1 c sliced celery .
  • 1 tsp salt .
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce .
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper .
  • 1 bay leaf .
  • sour cream .
  • Garnish .
  • 2 lbs sliced ground round .
  • 1 c sliced green peppers

Directions
  • Step #1 Heat the oil In a large-ish saucepan over med-heat/flame.
  • Step #2 Add the ground round & saute until browned.
  • Step #3 Add the garlic, onions, peppers, & celery & cook this until the vegetables are soft, about 8-10 mins.
  • Step #4 Add the beans, bay leaf, cloves, sugar, chili powder, salt, tomato sauce, tomatoes (and their juices), & pepper; stir well.
  • Step #5 Cover up & let simmer over low heat/flame for 1 1/2 hrs.
  • Step #6 Add the red wine & cook another 30 mins.
  • Step #7 Adjust the seasonings, if needed, before serving.
  • Step #8 Serve bowls of chili topped with grated cheese, a dollop of sour cream, & sliced green onions.
