Ingredients
3 c all-purpose flour
1/2 c white sugar
1 1/8 c margarine or butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 c milk
1 1/2 tsps vanilla extract
3 c canned pitted sour cherries, drained
1 tbsp baking soda
3 tbsps cornstarch
5 eggs
7 1/4 oz semisweet chocolate
1 tbsp milk
1 tsp salt
1 c white sugar
2 tbsps vegetable oil
1/4 c unsweetened cocoa powder
Directions
Step #1 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step #2 Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish or line with parchment paper.
Step #3 In a large bowl, cream together the margarine & 1 c sugar using an electric mixer.
Step #4 Mix in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the the vanilla.
Step #5 Combine the flour, salt, & baking soda; quickly fold into the egg mixture.
Step #6 Spread 2/3 of the batter in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Step #7 Stir the cocoa powder & 1 tbsp of milk into the remaining batter just until mixed.
Step #8 Spread evenly over the vanilla layer.
Step #9 Pat the cherries dry with paper towels, & sprinkle them evenly over the top.
Step #10 Bake for 40 to 50 mins in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with no crumbs.
Step #11 Let cool.
Step #12 In a small bowl, mix together cornstarch & 1/2 c sugar.
Step #13 Stir in 3 tbsps of milk.
Step #14 Heat remaining milk in a small saucepan just until hot but not boiling.
Step #15 Stir in the cornstarch mixture, & remove this from the heat.
Step #16 Let cool for 5 mins while stirring constantly.
Step #17 Stir in vanilla.
Step #18 Spread over the top of the cooled cake when cool.
Step #19 Chop chocolate, & place this in a microwave-safe dish.
Step #20 Heat at 30 second intervals, stirring each time, until just melted & smooth.
Step #21 Stir in the oil, & let cool.
Step #22 Spread over the custard layer, & chill.
Step #23 When set, cut the Donauwellen into about 20 squares to serve.
