My First Gingerbread House "2006" Recipe

Ingredients
  • Siding .
  • marshmallows (Twisted sticks) .
  • 4 c all-purpose flour, sifted .

  • Windows & fireplace mantle .
  • fondant (for Santa's bag) .
  • 6 hard candies, crushed .
  • decorative candies (for decorating) .
  • chocolate (Andies mint candies) .
  • 1 c cold water .
  • Royal Icing .
  • fondant .
  • Roof .
  • Porch .
  • 1 tsp double-acting baking powder .
  • red licorice .
  • 1 tsp salt .
  • Sled .
  • Gingerbread Dough .
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon .
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten .
  • 3/4 c butter .
  • 8 c powdered sugar .
  • fondant .
  • candy canes .
  • fruit leather, Red & Green striped .
  • spearmint, leaves rolled flat & cut with a cookie cutter .
  • Santa & Bag .
  • chocolate mint sticks .
  • Chimney .
  • 1/2 c meringue powder .
  • 1 c dark brown sugar .
  • 3/4 c unsulphured molasses .
  • toffee pieces

Directions
  • Step #1 Dough using the template here:.
  • Step #2 Warm molasses in a saucepan or microwave, but do not boil just to soften.
  • Step #3 Remove from heat & stir in the butter until melted.
  • Step #4 Let cool.
  • Step #5 In a large bowl, whisk together flour, ginger, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, & brown sugar.
  • Step #6 Add egg & mix well.
  • Step #7 Refrigerate at least one hr until dough becomes stiff enough to roll.
  • Step #8 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Step #9 Roll out dough right onto the bottom side of cookie pan or on a edge free cookie pan that is lined with parchment.
  • Step #10 Maximum thickness for dough should be 3/8-inch.
  • Step #11 For houses larger than 6 inches square, use 1/4-inch thickness & for smaller houses, use 1/8-inch.
  • Step #12 Weight-bearing walls should be just slightly thicker.
  • Step #13 Place the template & cut house pieces using a ruler to guide for smooth straight edges.
  • Step #14 Bake for 15 mins.
  • Step #15 If window are to be cut out do before baking.
  • Step #16 May place broken hard candies in windows for a glass effect be sure to really fill it.
  • Step #17 Royal Icing:.
  • Step #18 Mix 1/2 the powder & 1/2 the water beating till peaks form, add 1/2 the sugar beating till a good consistency.
  • Step #19 This half is to assembly.
  • Step #20 In a thick Styrofoam base cut grooves the size of the baked walls.
  • Step #21 Using the 4 wall as a guide.
  • Step #22 Pipe the icing into the grooves.
  • Step #23 Pipe out the icing on the bottom & one end of one long wall & one short, put them together at a 90-degree angle, & hold them in place on the foam with cans if needed.
  • Step #24 Repeat with the remaining two walls, running a line of icing glue along the corners so that all the walls are glued together.
  • Step #25 Again hold walls in place until icing is dry.
  • Step #26 Let the roofless house dry at least 30 mins until the icing is firmly set.
  • Step #27 At this time careful plan & decorate the inside as you chose.
  • Step #28 Or leave it empty.
  • Step #29 Run a thick line of icing along one long side of a roof piece.
  • Step #30 Stick the two roof sections together at an angle & set the two pieces on top of the house.
  • Step #31 Make sure that the roof overhang is the same at both ends of the house, although it is okay if it isn't perfect.
  • Step #32 Hold the roof carefully in place until it dries.
  • Step #33 Let dry for half an hr.
  • Step #34 To attach the chimney, on one side of the roof near the peak, glue one angled piece to the roof.
  • Step #35 Glue the largest rectangle to the angled piece & then glue the second angled piece in place.
  • Step #36 Last, glue the smallest rectangle to the other sections.
  • Step #37 Hide any mistakes under a "snow" of icing.
  • Step #38 Side a this layer of icing on sides of house One side at a time.
  • Step #39 Place fruit roll up starting from the bottom going up overlapping slightly.
  • Step #40 Be sure to cut it where the window are.
  • Step #41 Leave the top half of the front & back to overlap with the spearmint leave adhering with icing.
  • Step #42 Spread the icing covering the base for snow.
  • Step #43 Place Chocolate Mint sticks along the front & side of the house for porch add railing using mint sticks & glue with icing the marshmallow on place the bird (shaped from the fondant) on the railing.
  • Step #44 using the twisted marshmallow place along the bottom edge of the house.
  • Step #45 Make the other half of icing when needed.
  • Step #46 Sled is made from a chocolate bar & peppermint sticks, thin red licorice, red fondant as Santa `s bag.
  • Step #47 Spread icing on roof & starting at the bottom edge work your way up in uneven rows overlapping slightly.
  • Step #48 Decorate the chimney by icing then pressing toffee bits into it.
  • Step #49 Then shape Santa & decorate him with a bread made from icing & a red fondant hat, skin fondant face place this in chimney.
  • Step #50 With the icing go over the house & fill in where needed to make it look like snow & at the eves making icicles.
  • Step #51 Place a small battery lit candle inside so you can appreciate the stained glass windows.
  • Step #52 Add your touches.
