Chocolate Walnut Squares Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 c milk
  • 2 tsps vanilla extract
  • 1 c confectioners' sugar
  • 2 c sugar
  • 1 c butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 c all-purpose flour
  • 4 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 c sliced walnuts
  • 2 (1 oz) squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 5 tbsps all-purpose flour
  • FROSTING:
  • 1 c butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract*

Directions
  • Step #1 In a mixing bowl, cream butter & sugar.
  • Step #2 Beat in eggs & vanilla.
  • Step #3 Add flour & salt; mix well.
  • Step #4 Fold in walnuts.
  • Step #5 Spread half of batter into a greased 13-in.
  • Step #6 x 9-in.
  • Step #7 x 2-in.
  • Step #8 baking pan.
  • Step #9 Add chocolate to the remaining batter; mix well.
  • Step #10 Carefully spread over batter in pan.
  • Step #11 Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 mins or until cake tests done.
  • Step #12 Cook completely.
  • Step #13 For frosting, mix flour & milk in a saucepan.
  • Step #14 Cook & stir over med-heat/flame until a thick paste forms, about 10 mins.
  • Step #15 Cool completely.
  • Step #16 In a mixing bowl, cream butter & confectioners' sugar.
  • Step #17 Add vanilla & mix well.
  • Step #18 Gradually add the milk mixture; beat for 5 mins.
  • Step #19 Frost cake.
  • Step #20 Store in the refrigerator.
