Baklava Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1/2 c Honey
  • 3 Sticks Butter; melted
  • 1/2 c Light corn syrup
  • 1 tb Cinnamon
  • sliced zest of 1 orange
  • 1 c Water
  • 1 lb Almonds or walnuts; coarsely-ground
  • === SYRUP ===
  • Confectioners' sugar; in a shaker
  • 2 c Sugar
  • 1 lb Phyllo leaves ; thawed, wrapped

Directions
  • Step #1 preheat your trusty oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step #2 Unfold phyllo dough on work surface until flat.
  • Step #3 Place a 9- by 13-inch jelly roll pan over phyllo & cut dough to fit pan (save scraps for extra inside layers or for another recipe).
  • Step #4 Cover phyllo dough with a clean, damp towel.
  • Step #5 Brush bottom & sides of jelly roll pan with butter to coat.
  • Step #6 Mix nuts with cinnamon.
  • Step #7 Cover bottom of pan with 1 sheet of phyllo & brush with butter.
  • Step #8 Repeat 7 times.
  • Step #9 Sprinkle top with 1/3 of nut mixture.
  • Step #10 Cover with 3 layers of phyllo, each brushed with butter.
  • Step #11 Layer with 1/3 of nut mixture & repeat with 3 layers of phyllo, each brushed with butter.
  • Step #12 Layer with remaining 1/3 of nut mixture, & cover with 8 layers of phyllo, each brushed with butter.
  • Step #13 Push edges of dough into sides of pan to even them.
  • Step #14 Using a sharp knife, cut pastry into small diamond shapes (with 1 1/2-inch sides), cutting through all layers.
  • Step #15 Sprinkle top water over top to prevent phyllo from curling up.
  • Step #16 Bake for 1 hr.
  • Step #17 In a saucepan mix sugar, water, corn syrup & orange zest.
  • Step #18 Bring to a boil, reduce heat & let simmer 10 mins.
  • Step #19 stir in the honey.
  • Step #20 Set aside to cool slightly.
  • Step #21 Remove baklava from oven & pour warm syrup over entire pan.
  • Step #22 Serve Sprinkle topd with confectioners' sugar.
  • Step #23 This recipe yields 8 to 10 servings.
