Durban SA Chilli Beans

- 1 Can of beans in tomato sauce shopping list
- 1 Can of white beans (butter beans are good but it's up to you) shopping list
- 1 onion finely chopped shopping list
- 1 can chopped tomatoes shopping list
- 2 long red chillies (remove seeds) and chopped shopping list
- 1/2 tsp chilli powder shopping list
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder shopping list
- 3 cardoman pods * shopping list
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds * shopping list
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds * shopping list
- 1 Tbs crushed garlic shopping list
- 4 Tbs of olive oil shopping list
- 4 Tbs chopped coriander (cilantro) shopping list
How to make it
- Open the can of white beans and drain well
- Open the can of beans in tomato sauce
- Open the can of tomatoes
- Place the oil in a saucepan and put on a medium heat
- Put in the ingredients marked * into the saucepan
- When the mustard seeds start to to pop, add the onions, garlic and chillies
- As the onions start to brown, add the chilli powder, and turmeric
- Braise the chilli powder for about 2 to 3 minutes, stirring all the time (it must not catch on the saucepan)
- Add the tomatoes and allow to cook for 3 to 5 minutes
- Add beans, turn the heat down and cook for a further 15 mins - stir occassionally
- Remove beans to a serving dish, sprinkle with chopped coriander
- Can be refrigerated but tastes better hot or at room temperature for a barbecue side dish
