Caramel Dumplings

- Sauce: shopping list
- 2 cups water shopping list
- 2 cups brown sugar (that's brown sugar, not raw) shopping list
- 1 tablespoon of butter (I personally never put that in) shopping list
- Dumplings: shopping list
- 1 1/4 cup of self-raising flour (or 1 1/4 cup of plain flour and 2 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder) shopping list
- 1/3 cup butter shopping list
- 1/3 cup white sugar (I made it once and forgot the sugar and I think they where nicer) shopping list
- 1/3 cup milk shopping list
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence/extract (not in the original recipe but I like it) shopping list
- Optional for serving: shopping list
- 1 1/2 cups poring cream or at least 1pt / 500ml vanilla ice-cream shopping list
How to make it
- Sauce:
- Place above ingredients in a large saucepan with well-fitting lid. Uncovered, dissolve sugar, bring to the boil, then reduce heat to simmering.
- Dumplings:
- DO NOT just melt the butter and mix together, the essential step to this recipe is to rub or cut the butter into the flour using either the tips of your fingers or butter knives until mixture resembles bread crumbs then mix in the rest of the ingredients. Drop dessert spoons full of the dumpling mixture into the summering sauce reduce the heat to low, cover with lid and cook for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before serving. I like to serve it with cream or ice-cream as the flavour is very rich.
- A little variation of my own (chocolate dumplings):
- Add about 50gr of the darkest chocolate into the sauce with the water and sugar .
