How to make it

  • On a sheet of waxed paper, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and 1/8 tsp salt.
  • Set aside
  • In a large bowl, using a wooden spoon, beat the brown sugar with the shortening, molasses, and egg until well blended.
  • Stir in the flour mixture
  • Cover and refrigerate for one hour
  • Preheat the oven to 375 F
  • Shape the dough into balls about 1 inch in diameter
  • Roll in the granulated sugar
  • Place 3 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets.
  • Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until the tops have cracked.

    This very nice cookie recipe reads similar to what Grandmother use to make,she used blackstrap molasses in hers...it was nice to run across your recipe today,bringing that astounding lady to the forefront of my memory at this particular time.
