Moravian Brown Cookies

- 1 - cup light brown sugar, firmly packed shopping list
- 1 - cup butter and shortening shopping list
- 1 - teaspoon salt shopping list
- 1/4 - teaspoon nutmeg shopping list
- 1 - Tablespoon cinnamon shopping list
- 1/2 - teaspoon cloves shopping list
- 1 - teaspoon ginger shopping list
- 1 - cup flour, sifted shopping list
- 1 - egg shopping list
- 1 - cup molasses shopping list
- 1 - teaspoon baking soda, dissolved in 1/4 cup hot water shopping list
- 4 - cups flour, sifted shopping list
How to make it
- Preheat oven to 325° F. Grease cookie sheet.
- Cream sugar and shortening.
- Sift together salt, spices, and 1 cup of flour.
- Sift into mixing bowl, work sugar and shortening into flour, add egg well beaten and slightly warmed molasses.
- Add hot water and soda, stirring into mixture.
- Stir in 4 cups sifted flour, a little at a time.
- Chill in refrigerator overnight.
- Next morning roll out, very thin, on floured board.
- Shape with Christmas cookie cutters: like men, deer, men on horseback, etc.
- Bake for about 15 minutes.
- Pierce with a darning needle when they come from the oven, so that they may be threaded to hang on Christmas tree.
- Cookies may be iced with colored frosting and decorated with pieces of fruit and nuts.
