Ingredients

How to make it

  • Butter a casserole dish. Put a layer of apples then a layer of onions. Sprinkle generously with brown sugar and sparingly with salt. Repeat layers until the dish is heaping. Dab the top with butter (and crumbs if you are using them.)
  • Bake slowly at 300 for about 3 hours. The longer it is baked the better it is. Uncover for the last 1/2 hour. This dish needs to be heaping, because it shrinks so much -- so make sure to allow for that!
