Ingredients

How to make it

  • Peel the potatoes and put them on to boil
  • In a large skillet (depending on how many servings), Fry the sliced onions until not quite tender
  • Add the ground beef and fry until done - but not brown, turning all the time. 3-4 minutes
  • .Crumble a stock cube into hot water and add to the mix
  • Stir to combine and bring back to a slow simmer
  • Taste and add salt and pepper if needed plus a good splash of Worcestershire sauce
  • Taste again and add more seasoning if required
  • Cook for another 15 minutes
  • Either add Bisto granules if you have them, or thicken the gravy with Cornstarch - but not too much of either. The mixture should be wet.
  • Mash the potatoes and season with salt and pepper, to your taste
  • Cover the skillet mix with the potatoes and sprinkle the grated cheese over the top
  • Brown under a heated grill (broiler?) until the cheese is melted and brown.
  • You can add lots of different things to this - chopped carrots, peas, etc and/ or serve veg alongside. This recipe is wordy, but, honestly, it's so quick and easy If you make the meaty bit, without the spuds, it freezes really well.
