10x Buttermilk Chocolate Layer Cake

- CAKE: shopping list
- • ½ cup shortening shopping list
- • 2 cups sugar shopping list
- • 4 eggs shopping list
- • 1 tsp vanilla shopping list
- • 2 squares (1oz each) unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled shopping list
- • 2 ½ cups flour shopping list
- • 1 ½ tsp baking soda shopping list
- • 1 tsp salt shopping list
- • 1 ½ cups buttermilk shopping list
- FROSTING: shopping list
- • ½ cup butter, softened shopping list
- • 1 (3oz) package cream cheese, softened shopping list
- • ½ tsp vanilla shopping list
- • 1 box 10X (confectioner’s) sugar shopping list
- • 1-2 Tb milk shopping list
- • 2 squares (1oz each) unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled shopping list
How to make it
- Cake:
- 1. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time. Stir in vanilla.
- 2. Add melted, cooled chocolate.
- 3. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add alternately to the batter along with the buttermilk.
- 4. Grease and flour two 9 inch cake pans. Divide batter evenly between the pans. Bake at 325 for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pans, remove from pans and cool completely before frosting.
- Frosting:
- 1. Combine butter, cream cheese, vanilla and salt; beat until light and fluffy. Add 10X sugar slowly, beating at low speed.
- 2. Stir in 1 Tb milk and melted chocolate. Beat until fluffy. Add additional tablespoon of milk, if needed.
- 3. Place one layer on cake plate. Spread a thick layer of frosting. Place second layer on top of frosting. Frost top layer.
