How to make it

  • In a large crock pot, on high, melt lard.
  • Heat the lard/oil until small bubbles begin to appear.
  • Do NOT allow the lard/oil to boil.
  • Turn the Lard /Oil down to low.
  • ~ ~ ~While waiting for the Lard to Melt~ ~ ~
  • In an old pitcher, or other heat proof (plastic/...) container, pour in the distilled water.
  • Add the lye slowly to the distilled water.
  • NEVER add water to the lye, ALWAYS add lye to the water.
  • When the temperature of the lye-water mixture reaches 120-ish, add the sugar to this lye water mixture.
  • ~ ~ ~When Both Lye Water and Lard are Ready~ ~ ~
  • Slowly pour the Distilled Water and Lye mixture into the warm melted Lard/Oil!
  • And I mean slowly, I poured in too much at once and it over flowed the crock pot.
  • It did eventually go down and I added the rest, took me about 10 minutes.
  • With a large heat resistance plastic, silicone, or wooden spoon, Mix Well.
  • Stir for 5 to 6 minutes, just to be sure all of the oils have contacted the lye.
  • If using a hand held blender, use it now.
  • Stir in the Aloe Vera Juice after light trace and before medium trace.
  • Bring to a medium trace. See Photo
  • This is the point, if you are adding additives, like rose petals, oatmeal, whatever you desire, do that now.
  • Stir them in well!
  • Cover. (I am thinking maybe I should not have covered, we will see tomorrow!)
  • Cook on low heat of the crock pot for around 40 minutes.
  • It should fold back in on itself as it cooks.
  • Do not stir, I know this will be hard to do.
  • It will not stick, I promise you.
  • Check on it every 10 minutes.

  • 15 Minutes In; See Photo
  • 20 Minutes In: See Photo
  • 30 Minutes In: See Photo
  • Between this 30 and 40 minute points, it will go down a bit in the bowl.
  • 40 Minutes in See Photo
  • When it has folded back in on itself, and cooked for 40 minutes, turn off the crock pot, and unplug it for safely sake.
  • Stir it well again.
  • This may be hard to do as it may be pretty solid already.
  • Just add a touch of water, up to a 1/2 cup of water if need be, only a little at a time.
  • Or even oils, like Jojoba / Coconut / Shea Butter...the list goes on...
  • Up to 3 ounces.
  • ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
  • At this point I added:
  • 1/4 cup African Shea Butter and
  • 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
  • ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
  • Add your essential oils for the person's/your favorite scent.
  • Mixing in well.
  • Pour into your prepared mold. And by pour I mean spoon or ladle. See Photo
  • If you want to use a cake pan that you have lined with parchment, I am sure that would work as well.
  • Allow to cool over night, or until set.
  • This should only be 24 hour.
  • Remove from mold.
  • Slice into even slices. (In my case I used a huge square muffin pan, so I just need to get them out of that.)
  • Place bars onto parchment lined cooking sheet.
  • Allow to cure in a draft free area for 1 week!
  • Yep, that's right, 1 week. With the extended cooking time where we did not stir it, we cooked all of the lye out and the soap is ready almost instantly!!!

  • Mine was not hard as I expected from the lady I followed to do this.
  • It is lumpy like mashed potatoes. I had a hard time mixing it back together to look nice, actually I never did in the end. See Photo
  • I just gave up and spooned it into the molds, pressing it into them firmly.
  • We will see how this worked out in the morning.

I have been making cold process soap for about ten years now, never tried hot process. It seems very complicated! I appreciate the step by step pictures, makes the process clearer. Hope it turns out well!
