I bake birthday and wedding cakes with my spare time. My husband is getting these for his birthday tomorrow because he prefers these over cakes. Easy peasy baking day for me! I found a lot of original Quaker Oats recipes for these cookies, all of them were slightly different. This one seems the best. There's mostly a variation in the amt. of butter and some recipes call for shortening for the fat. I'm going with real butter for my hubby. He likes having a little toast with his butter!

These have always been our favorite. Now my 40 year old son and his wife are asking for them. I sent them 4 dozen and I bet they really have vanished by now. But they are so quick to make and they like them so much, I enjoy doing it for them.

I cut the sugar down by 1/4 cup and substitute 1 cup of maple flavor oatmeal for regular oatmeal. I add chocolate chips to half of the recipe and white raisins in the rest. A delightful change.

I've made a lot of oatmeal cookies but these are by far the best. My son who is 25 and never baked cookies before baked a double batch for his workplace. Everyone loved them. The only change I make is using unsalted butter then adding the 1/2 teaspoon salt. I also use chocolate chips instead of raisins.

Thank you for the posting; this recipe brings back warm childhood memories. I'm baking these Gluten Free as I write. I'll post the Alterations if they turn out well.

These are good yet I'm concerned about calories; how many are in each heaping tablespoon full cookie?
