How to make it

  • String and snap the beans if they are fresh. Just open up the bag(s) if they are frozen. Put the beans, ham, salt, pepper and sugar into a large 4 quart pot. Add enough water to just barely cover the beans. Put the pot on the stove and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat so they just barely simmer. Cover the pot with a lid or a pizza pan and let it simmer on the back of the stove for at least half an hour. You can cook them longer if you like.
