How to make it

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Mix sugar and shortening together in a large bowl.
  • Stir until well blended.
  • Add eggs and vanilla, beat well.
  • Put flour in flour sifter and add in baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add gradually to above mixture, mixing well and adding milk as needed to keep the mixture moist and well blended.
  • Drop teaspoons full of cookie dough onto a greased cookie sheets
  • keeping them spaced about 3 inches apart.
  • Using a small juice glass with it's bottom greased and dipped into sugar, press down on each cookie to flatten.
  • Bake 10 to 12 minutes until just very lightly browned.
  • Remove from oven and tranfer cookies onto a cooling rack or double layer of paper towels to cool.
  • Keep in a airtight container. If cookies become hard place a slice of fresh bread in the container of cookies over night to soften.
