[Optional] Cut open and break up Italian sausage. Throw in a sauce pan with 1/2 finely chopped onion, 2 cloves chopped garlic, and plenty of olive oil. Brown and thoroughly break up sausage.
Mix in the Italian sausage when you add the tomato mix.
I've also had adding a sprig of rosemary suggested, but I didn't seem to notice much noticeable effect.

I don't have any italian sausage so I'm going to use ground turkey with the above alteration and then throw it in the crockpot to simmer all day.
