Almas Awesome Applesauce Date Pecan Cake

Old recipe. Delicious applesauce cake made with brown sugar, dates, pecans and spices. Iced with a cream cheese icing.
Ingredients
- 1 stick unsalted butter shopping list
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed shopping list
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract shopping list
- 2 eggs shopping list
- 3 cups applesauce, *divided use* shopping list
- 2 cups all-purpose flour shopping list
- 2 teaspoons baking soda shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon salt shopping list
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves shopping list
- 1 cup chopped dates shopping list
- 3/4 cup chopped pecans shopping list
- cream cheese icing shopping list
- 3 ounces cream cheese, softened shopping list
- 1-2 tablespoons butter, softened shopping list
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract shopping list
- 2 cups powdered sugar shopping list
How to make it
- Grease and flour 9 X 13 inch baking pan
- In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar
- Add vanilla and eggs, and beat again
- In a saucepan, heat 2 cups applesauce and add to sugar mixture
- Beat thoroughly
- Combine flour, baking soda, salt and spices
- Add to the sugar mixture, beat thoroughly
- Add remaining 1 cup applesauce (not heated), beat 1 minute more
- Stir in dates and pecans
- Pour into prepared pan and bake 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean
- Remove from oven and cool
- Top with cream cheese icing
- CREAM CHEESE ICING
- Cream butter and cream cheese together
- Add powdered sugar
- Beat until smooth
