Rustic Apple Squares Recipe
Rustic looking apple pastry that's simply addictive; there's just something about the combination of this crust, the crushed corn flakes, and the sweet glaze that make this dessert out of this world. I like to use Cortland apples.

Ingredients
  • CRUST
  • 2 1/2 c flour
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 egg yolks and milk to equal 2/3 cup, whisked together
  • 1 c shortening
  • 2 egg whites, whisked
  • FILLING
  • 1 c crushed corn flakes
  • 6-12 apples, depending on size
  • 1 c sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 3 Tbsp flour
  • 4 Tbsp butter, approximately
  • GLAZE
  • 1 c powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 3 Tbsp milk

Directions
  1. CRUST: Mix the crust ingredients like pie crust by combining dry ingredients, lightly mixing in shortening, and then adding yolks and milk until a dough ball forms. Divide dough in half and roll out each half to the size of a jelly roll pan. Transfer half of dough to a baking sheet to serve as the bottom crust.
  2. FILLING: Sprinkle crushed corn flakes onto the bottom crust. Peel and slice 6-12 apples (depending on size), and toss with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 3 Tbsp flour. Distribute apple mixture on bottom crust and dot with approximately 4 Tbsp butter. Cover filling with top crust and crimp to seal edges. Beat 2 egg whites until frothy and brush onto the top crust.
  3. BAKE: at 400 for approximately 35 minutes.
  4. GLAZE: while warm.
