How to make it

  • CRUST: Mix the crust ingredients like pie crust by combining dry ingredients, lightly mixing in shortening, and then adding yolks and milk until a dough ball forms. Divide dough in half and roll out each half to the size of a jelly roll pan. Transfer half of dough to a baking sheet to serve as the bottom crust.
  • FILLING: Sprinkle crushed corn flakes onto the bottom crust. Peel and slice 6-12 apples (depending on size), and toss with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 3 Tbsp flour. Distribute apple mixture on bottom crust and dot with approximately 4 Tbsp butter. Cover filling with top crust and crimp to seal edges. Beat 2 egg whites until frothy and brush onto the top crust.
  • BAKE: at 400 for approximately 35 minutes.
  • GLAZE: while warm.
