Rustic Apple Squares

- 2 1/2 c flour shopping list
- 2 Tbsp sugar shopping list
- 1/2 tsp salt shopping list
- 2 egg yolks and milk to equal 2/3 cup, whisked together shopping list
- 1 c shortening shopping list
- 2 egg whites, whisked shopping list
- FILLING shopping list
- 1 c crushed corn flakes shopping list
- 6-12 apples, depending on size shopping list
- 1 c sugar shopping list
- 2 tsp cinnamon shopping list
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg shopping list
- 3 Tbsp flour shopping list
- 4 Tbsp butter, approximately shopping list

- 1 c powdered sugar shopping list
- 1 tsp vanilla shopping list
- 3 Tbsp butter shopping list
- 3 Tbsp milk shopping list
How to make it
- CRUST: Mix the crust ingredients like pie crust by combining dry ingredients, lightly mixing in shortening, and then adding yolks and milk until a dough ball forms. Divide dough in half and roll out each half to the size of a jelly roll pan. Transfer half of dough to a baking sheet to serve as the bottom crust.
- FILLING: Sprinkle crushed corn flakes onto the bottom crust. Peel and slice 6-12 apples (depending on size), and toss with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 3 Tbsp flour. Distribute apple mixture on bottom crust and dot with approximately 4 Tbsp butter. Cover filling with top crust and crimp to seal edges. Beat 2 egg whites until frothy and brush onto the top crust.
- BAKE: at 400 for approximately 35 minutes.
- GLAZE: while warm.
