How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 375 and spray an 8 inch round pan with cooking spray.
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.
  • Combine buttermilk, applesauce and butter in a small bowl, then add to flour mixture.
  • Stir until mixture forms a ball and turn out onto a floured surface.
  • Knead raisins into dough and pat into a 7 inch round.
  • Place in prepared pan and cut a 1/4 inch deep cross in the top of the dough with a sharp knife.
  • Brush top of the dough with the milk.
  • Bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool 10 minutes in pan, then turn out and turn right side up.
  • Cool completely and cut into 16 wedges.
