How to make it

  • Boil and mash the potatoes and make a pile on your cooking surface
  • Make an equal sized pile of flour next to your potato pile and combine the two until flour isn't loose
  • make a hole in the center of your potato/flour pile and add 1 egg, 1/2 cup oil and a dash of salt
  • Knead the ingredients together until they're completely combined
  • Start boiling a large pot of water
  • Roll the dough into a log and cut it in half.
  • Roll one of the logs into a longer, thinner log (about half of the original size), then cut 1.5 inch pieces down the length of it
  • Meanwhile heat vegetable oil in a saucepan and add/combine breadcrumbs, sugar and vanilla until lightly toasted. Set aside, off of heat.
  • Flatten each piece with your floured hand and put about three blackberries in each one. Fold edges over to close the ball.
  • Put the dumplings into the boiling water, 6 at a time until they float to the surface, and then about 30 seconds longer. Promptly remove from the water and roll each one in the breadcrumb/sugar mixture until well coated. Set aside.
  • Continue with the rest of the dumplings. These are best served cold. You can also use strawberries or very small plums instead of blackberries.
  • Sorry about the measurements being so iffy- i tend to work better if i make my own rules
