Ingredients

How to make it

  • Beat 2 egg whites (save egg yolks for dough) until fluffy and stiff.
  • Gently add in 1 cup of brown sugar.
  • Set aside.
  • Cream together: 1 cup shortening, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup granulated sugar.
  • In a small bowl gently beat the egg yolks, 1 Tblsp cold water, and 1 tsp. vanilla.
  • Add to shortening/sugar mixture and beat for 1 minute.
  • Combine: 2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1 tsp baking soda.
  • Gradually add flour mixture to shortening/sugar/egg mixture.
  • Beat until dough forms.
  • Press dough into greased 9 x 13 pan.
  • Firmly press chocolate chips into the dough.
  • spread egg white mixture over the top.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until top is nicely browned.
  • I like these bars cooled completely before eating, but my younger daughter loves them hot and melty right from the oven!
