How to make it

  • Day Before: Soak navy beans overnight.
  • Next Day: Bring a pot of water with 1 tbsp. baking soda to a boil and add beans. Simmer until beans are tender.
  • Brown ground beef and add salt and pepper, tomatoes and cooked beans. Taste for seasonings and add more salt and pepper if required.
  • In a casserole dish layer meat/bean mixture, sliced onions, brown sugar. Continue to layer until casserole dish is full. Top with a layer of bacon and a generous sprinkle of brown sugar. Bake at 375 F for 1 1/2 hours.
