French Ontion Burgers Recipe
A new twist on an old favorite

Ingredients
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cups sliced onions
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp coarsely ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cup shredded regular or reduced-fat Swiss cheese (3 ounces)
  • 4 - 3/4 inch thick slices French or Italian bread

Directions
  1. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion and cook for about 10 minutes or until golden. Stir occasionally.
  3. Stir in the salt and 1/4 tsp of the black pepper.
  4. Cover and keep warm.
  5. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the beef, worcestershire sauce, the remaining 1/2 tsp black pepper, and the garlic. Mix well.
  6. Shape the beef mixture into eight 4-inch-diameter patties.
  7. Top four of the patties evenly with the cheese.
  8. Top with remaining patties, pressing down lightly and sealing the edges to enclose the cheese.
  9. Place the burgers on the unheated rack of a broiler pan. Broil 4 inches from the heat for 14 to 18 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the burger registers 160 F.
  10. Turn once halfway through the broiling.
  11. Add the bread slices to the pan for the last 1 to 2 minutes of broiling or until toasted. Turn once
  12. Serve the patties on the toasted bread slices topped with the onion mixture.
