Ingredients

How to make it

  • In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat.
  • Add the onion and cook for about 10 minutes or until golden. Stir occasionally.
  • Stir in the salt and 1/4 tsp of the black pepper.
  • Cover and keep warm.
  • Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the beef, worcestershire sauce, the remaining 1/2 tsp black pepper, and the garlic. Mix well.
  • Shape the beef mixture into eight 4-inch-diameter patties.
  • Top four of the patties evenly with the cheese.
  • Top with remaining patties, pressing down lightly and sealing the edges to enclose the cheese.
  • Place the burgers on the unheated rack of a broiler pan. Broil 4 inches from the heat for 14 to 18 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the burger registers 160 F.
  • Turn once halfway through the broiling.
  • Add the bread slices to the pan for the last 1 to 2 minutes of broiling or until toasted. Turn once
  • Serve the patties on the toasted bread slices topped with the onion mixture.
