French Ontion Burgers

- 1 tbsp olive oil shopping list
- 3 cups sliced onions shopping list
- 1/4 tsp salt shopping list
- 3/4 tsp coarsely ground black pepper shopping list
- 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef shopping list
- 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce shopping list
- 2 cloves garlic, minced shopping list
- 3/4 cup shredded regular or reduced-fat swiss cheese (3 ounces) shopping list
- 4 - 3/4 inch thick slices French or Italian bread shopping list
How to make it
- In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat.
- Add the onion and cook for about 10 minutes or until golden. Stir occasionally.
- Stir in the salt and 1/4 tsp of the black pepper.
- Cover and keep warm.
- Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the beef, worcestershire sauce, the remaining 1/2 tsp black pepper, and the garlic. Mix well.
- Shape the beef mixture into eight 4-inch-diameter patties.
- Top four of the patties evenly with the cheese.
- Top with remaining patties, pressing down lightly and sealing the edges to enclose the cheese.
- Place the burgers on the unheated rack of a broiler pan. Broil 4 inches from the heat for 14 to 18 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the burger registers 160 F.
- Turn once halfway through the broiling.
- Add the bread slices to the pan for the last 1 to 2 minutes of broiling or until toasted. Turn once
- Serve the patties on the toasted bread slices topped with the onion mixture.
