I grew up on these and not "regular" chocolate chip cookies, these are softer.

Ingredients
  • 1 c shortening (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE)
  • 3/4 c brown sugar
  • 3/4 c white sugar
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1 tbsp hot water
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/4 c flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 c rolled oats
  • 1 - 6 oz pkg of chocolate chips (we always had semisweet)

Directions
  1. cream shortening and sugar until fluffy
  2. beat in eggs, hot water and vanilla
  3. sift together flour, soda and salt and combine with shortening mix
  4. blend in oats and chocolate chips
  5. using a teaspoon drop on greased cookie sheet
  6. bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes (longer if you don't like soft cookies) or until delicately browned
  7. makes 7-8 dozen cookies
