Ingredients
  • Pomfrets - 2 (500gms each)
  • Salt - to taste
  • Lemon juice - 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - quarter tbsp
  • Onion - 1 medium sized
  • Lemons - 2
  • Oil - to shallow fry
  • FOR THE MASALA PASTE
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece
  • Red chillies - 8
  • Cumin seeds - half tsp
  • Garlic - 8 cloves
  • Peppercorns - 5
  • cloves - 5
  • Cinnamon - half inch stick
  • Vinegar - 2 tbsps
  • Sugar - half tsp
  • Salt - to taste

Directions
  1. Wash, clean and pat dry the fish. Make diagonal slits on either sides of the fish using a sharp knife. Rub salt, lemon juice, turmeric powder, inside and outside of the fish. Keep aside for half an hour preferably in a refrigerator.
  2. To make the masala paste, peel and wash ginger. Remove stems of red chillies. Combine with rest of the ingredients of the masala paste and grind to a smooth paste, using little water if required.
  3. Apply paste on both sides of the fish and keep aside for 15 minutes preferably in the refrigerator.
  4. Wash and cut lemons into wedges. Peel and wash and cut the onions into roundels and then into separate rings. Keep aside to serve as accompaniments.
  5. Heat oil in a pan and shallo fry fish till golden on both sides.
  6. Serve hot with lemon wedges, onion rings and chutney of your choice.
