How to make it

  • Cook bacon slices in skillet until crisp then drain crumble and set aside.
  • Pour off drippings reserving two tablespoons in skillet.
  • Sauté onion and green peppers in drippings then stir in tomatoes and sugar.
  • Bring to a boil the reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes stirring occasionally.
  • Bring water and salt to boil then add grits and cook 20 minutes stirring frequently.
  • Remove from heat and stir in tomato mixture.
  • Spoon into serving dish and sprinkle bacon on top.
