CRANBERRY BUTTON COOKIES This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Johnson Estate in Rockwall, Texas in 1991.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1-1/2 cups brown sugar packed
  • 1-1/2 cups fresh ground cranberries
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 3 cups quick cooking oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Directions
  1. In large mixing bowl combine flour, baking soda, ginger, nutmeg, salt and oats.
  2. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender or table knives until particles are very fine.
  3. Add cranberries and brown sugar then mix until well blended then cover and chill 1 hour.
  4. Roll out dough to 1/4" thickness and cut into 3" rounds.
  5. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 375 for 15 minutes then cool.
