Ingredients
  • · 1 pound hamburger (see Note)
  • · 1 cup regular oatmeal, uncooked
  • · 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • · 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • · 1 cup ketchup (divided)
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne (can be omitted)
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. rubbed sage
  • 1 cup tomato sauce (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons prepared mustard
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine the hamburger, oats, onion, egg, 1/2 cup ketchup, Worcestershire, salt and pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, sage, and 1/2 cup tomato sauce.
  3. Mix well, and pack into a lightly greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  4. Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes. (Oven temperatures vary; yours may take more or less time) The topping should be bubbly when it is ready.
  5. Stir together the remaining 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/2 cup tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, brown sugar, prepared mustard and vinegar.
  6. Pour over meatloaf, and bake 45 to 50 minutes longer.
  7. Bake for 40 more minutes after adding the topping.
  8. Note:
  9. The best hamburger for meatloaf is neither the leanest nor the fattest.
  10. Since most supermarkets offer a choice these days, look for hamburger that is marked 80 to 85 percent lean
