Sweet and Spicy Meatloaf

- · 1 pound hamburger (see Note) shopping list
- · 1 cup regular oatmeal, uncooked shopping list
- · 1 medium onion, finely chopped shopping list
- · 1 egg, lightly beaten shopping list
- · 1 cup ketchup (divided) shopping list
- 2 tsp. worcestershire sauce shopping list
- 1 tsp. salt shopping list
- 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper shopping list
- 1/4 tsp. cayenne (can be omitted) shopping list
- 1 tsp. garlic powder shopping list
- 1 tsp. rubbed sage shopping list
- 1 cup tomato sauce (divided) shopping list
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste shopping list
- 1/2 cup water shopping list
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar shopping list
- 2 tablespoons prepared mustard shopping list
- 2 tablespoons vinegar shopping list
How to make it
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Combine the hamburger, oats, onion, egg, 1/2 cup ketchup, Worcestershire, salt and pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, sage, and 1/2 cup tomato sauce.
- Mix well, and pack into a lightly greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
- Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes. (Oven temperatures vary; yours may take more or less time) The topping should be bubbly when it is ready.
- Stir together the remaining 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/2 cup tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, brown sugar, prepared mustard and vinegar.
- Pour over meatloaf, and bake 45 to 50 minutes longer.
- Bake for 40 more minutes after adding the topping.
- Note:
- The best hamburger for meatloaf is neither the leanest nor the fattest.
- Since most supermarkets offer a choice these days, look for hamburger that is marked 80 to 85 percent lean
