How to make it

  • Butter the bread on one side - thickness to your taste
  • Place slice of bread buttered side down
  • Dress sandwich with sliced cheese, sliced tomato and sliced onion
  • Place second slice of bread buttered side up
  • Barbeque bread over low heat. Take care not to burn - this happens very quickly if the buttered sides are inside

elgab, In South Africa the most popular is most probably Mrs Ball's chutney. Which I believe our ex pats import so that they do not get too homesick. We have used it quite regularly to spice up a "sarmy" in the kids tuck box.

Jessyjane. With biltong,I have gone to the route of using commercial mixes. I'll place a biltong recipe shortly, unless someone beats me to it. Biltong and dried sausages are another SA institution.

Chutney sounds like a great idea on a sandwich! I will try it.
