Croque Monsieur

- 2 tbsp. unsalted butter shopping list
- 2 1/2 tbsp. all-purpose flour shopping list
- 1 cup whole milk shopping list
- pinch of ground nutmeg shopping list
- 1/2 bay leaf shopping list
- 6 slices firm white sandwich bread (cut off crust) shopping list
- 6 thin slices black forest ham shopping list
- 1/2 lb. grated gruyere shopping list
- Dijon mustard shopping list
How to make it
- Melt the butter over low heat in a small saucepan and add the flour all at once.
- Stir with a wooden spoon for 2 minutes.
- Slowly whisk in milk.
- Add nutmeg and bay leaf.
- Increase heat to medium-high and boil, whisking constantly, about 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat, add salt and pepper, and whisk in 1/2 cup gruyere.
- Remove bay leaf and set aside.
- Lay bread slices on baking sheet and toast for 2 minutes.
- Turn bread over and toast for an additional 2 minutes.
- Remove baking sheet from oven and preheat broiler on high.
- On baking sheet, lightly brush all bread slices with dijon mustard.
- Top 3 slices of bread with one slice ham each and top with about 1/8 cup gruyere.
- Place other bread on top to make sandwich.
- Spoon cheese sauce on top of the sandwiches (don't be shy!).
- Sprinkle remaining gruyere on top of sauce.
- Place baking sheet in oven and broil until cheese on top bubbles and begins to brown slightly, about 2-4 minutes.
