Ingredients
  • This may sound barbarous to some, but because your shot will most likely enter the intestine of your quarry and if not field dressed, will give the bird a taste and odor that ruins the eating of said bird.
  • Because the crop of your bird most likely will contain wild food it is wise to remove it before it taints the whole breast:
  • Slit skin of breast at base of neck, remove crop.
  • For the viscera, cut along the keel bone, break keel bone away form pelvis to allow hand into cavity, pushing lungs, windpipe toward rear of bird.
  • Reason behind this is to allow the body heat of the bird to cool completely. Because game birds body heat is over 100 degrees, just imagine if you let meat out in the sun at 100 degrees outside. How long would it take for the meat to spoil.
  • For the same reason I would not want to eat beef that has not been bled out, game birds have such strong taste if not done the same.

Directions
  1. We will number these for you! Just hit 'enter' after every step.

Very interesting ^5

Very good post!! A good thing to remember now that season is upon us!!

Very good tips Joyce. We also take coolers with us to ice them down as quickly as possible. It should be noted to novice hunters that completely field dressing a game birds while in the field is illegal in most states. You must leave either the head or a full feathered wing. Great post... Jim

Obviously, you have to know what you're doing.

Im glad you posted this. i put it into my group page for hunters nad gatherers. holly
