Ingredients
  • 1 medium orange
  • 6 cups water
  • 20 whole cloves
  • 1 (3½-inch) cinnamon stick
  • 1 (12-ounce) can, and 1 (6-ounce) can frozen cranberry juice cocktail concentrate, thawed
  • ½ cup golden raisins
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 8 thin orange slices, for garnish

Directions
  1. Using a small, sharp knife, cut 8 (3- by ½-inch) strips of peel (colored part only) from orange.
  2. Cut orange in half; squeeze and reserve juice.
  3. Bring 1 cup water with orange peel strips, 12 cloves and the cinnamon stick to simmer in a heavy, small saucepan.
  4. Cover and simmer 20 minutes.
  5. Strain liquid into another large saucepan.
  6. Add 4 cups water, cranberry juice, raisins and cardamom.
  7. Taste and add remaining 1 cup water if desired.
  8. Heat over low heat. Stir in reserved orange juice and lemon juice.
  9. Pierce rind of each orange slice with one of the remaining cloves.
  10. Ladle drinks into 8 mugs.
  11. Garnish each with an orange
