Torte With Caramel Glazed And Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Ingredients
  • 6 eggs separated
  • 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup cold water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • Glaze:
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Frosting:
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 5 ounces unsweetened melted chocolate cooled
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 6 tablespoons cold coffee

Directions
  1. Grease and flour 4 round layer pans then preheat oven to 325.
  2. Beat egg yolks until very thick and lemon colored about 5 minutes then pour into large bowl.
  3. Gradually beat in sugar.
  4. Beat in flour, baking powder and salt alternately with water and vanilla on low speed.
  5. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff then gradually fold yolk mixture into whites.
  6. Divide batter among pans then bake 30 minutes and cool 5 minutes.
  7. Loosen edges of layers with knife then invert on wire racks and cool completely.
  8. Mix butter and chocolate then stir in powdered sugar and coffee then beat until smooth.
  9. Slice each layer of cake to make 8 layers then reserve layer with smoothest top for top of cake.
  10. Fill 7 layers with 1/3 cup frosting each then frost side of cake with remaining frosting.
  11. Prepare glaze by heating sugar over low heat stirring constantly until sugar is melted and golden.
  12. Remove from heat then stir in butter.
  13. Place reserved layer on cookie sheet and pour glaze evenly over layer spreading to edges.
  14. Working quickly snip into 12 wedges with kitchen scissors.
  15. Arrange wedges on top of filled layers.
