Torte with Caramel Glazed and Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

- 6 eggs separated shopping list
- 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar shopping list
- 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour shopping list
- 1 teaspoon baking powder shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon salt shopping list
- 1/3 cup cold water shopping list
- 2 teaspoons vanilla shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar shopping list
- Glaze: shopping list
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar shopping list
- 2 tablespoons butter shopping list
- Frosting: shopping list
- 1/2 cup butter softened shopping list
- 5 ounces unsweetened melted chocolate cooled shopping list
- 5 cups powdered sugar shopping list
- 6 tablespoons cold coffee shopping list
How to make it
- Grease and flour 4 round layer pans then preheat oven to 325.
- Beat egg yolks until very thick and lemon colored about 5 minutes then pour into large bowl.
- Gradually beat in sugar.
- Beat in flour, baking powder and salt alternately with water and vanilla on low speed.
- Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff then gradually fold yolk mixture into whites.
- Divide batter among pans then bake 30 minutes and cool 5 minutes.
- Loosen edges of layers with knife then invert on wire racks and cool completely.
- Mix butter and chocolate then stir in powdered sugar and coffee then beat until smooth.
- Slice each layer of cake to make 8 layers then reserve layer with smoothest top for top of cake.
- Fill 7 layers with 1/3 cup frosting each then frost side of cake with remaining frosting.
- Prepare glaze by heating sugar over low heat stirring constantly until sugar is melted and golden.
- Remove from heat then stir in butter.
- Place reserved layer on cookie sheet and pour glaze evenly over layer spreading to edges.
- Working quickly snip into 12 wedges with kitchen scissors.
- Arrange wedges on top of filled layers.
