Another from the kitchen of my friend, Florence Valerio. I don't think I ever knew anyone who baked as much as she did! I suppose practice does, indeed, make perfect. This cake is surely close!

Ingredients
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • Juice of an orange
  • 5 large Granny Smith apples
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 5 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup nuts, your choice

Directions
  1. Butter and flour a tube (turk's head) pan.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  3. Combine in a bowl the flour, sugar, oil, eggs, baking powder and orange juice.
  4. Peel, core and slice the apples as for pie.
  5. Sprinkle apple slices with cinnamon, sugar and nuts.
  6. Set aside.
  7. Pour 1/2 the batter into the prepared pan.
  8. Layer with apple mixture.
  9. Pour in rest of batter.
  10. Finish up with the apple mixture on top.
  11. Bake for 1 3/4 hours.
