Grapefruit Alaska Recipe
A fun use of the abundance of grapefuit. A surpising dessert anytime.

Ingredients
  • 2 grapefruit
  • 1/4 cup of Kirsch
  • 1/8 cup of dark brown sugar
  • 3 egg whites
  • 9 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1/2 pint of vanilla ice cream
  • 1/2 pint of orange sherbert

Directions
  1. Wash, dry grapefruit, halve.
  2. Remove sections.
  3. Cut away all membrane from shells.
  4. Place fruit in bowl.
  5. Sprinkle with kirsch and brown sugar.
  6. Chill the rinds and the fruit.
  7. Beat whites until frothy; add sugar gradually and beat until stiff.
  8. Drain grapefruit.
  9. Put 1/4 cup of sherbert in bottom of grapefruit shell.
  10. Top with 1/4 cup of fruit sections.
  11. Top with 1/4 cup of vanilla icecream
  12. Spread meringue over top of filling to the edges to seal.
  13. Place on cookie sheet.
  14. Broil until lightly brown.
  15. Serve at once.
